Pumpkins, Paws & Autumn Adventures: Fun Things to Do with Your Dog

Crisp mornings, crunchy leaves, muddy paws and cosy evenings autumn is one of the best times of year to get out and explore with your dog.

As the temperatures cool and the countryside changes colour, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the season together.

From woodland adventures to pumpkin picking, here are some of our favourite autumn activities for dogs and their humans.

1. Explore a New Woodland Walk

Autumn is the perfect excuse to discover somewhere new.

Find a dog-friendly woodland, forest or countryside trail and let your dog take their time exploring.

The changing smells, fallen leaves and new surroundings provide plenty of mental stimulation for dogs, while all those miles of sniffing and exploring make for a great autumn adventure.

Don't forget a towel for the journey home muddy paws are practically guaranteed!

2. Visit a Dog-Friendly Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkin picking isn't just for humans!

More and more pumpkin patches and farms welcome dogs, making them a fun autumn day out for the whole family.

Before visiting, check that dogs are allowed and keep them on a lead where required.

And, of course, take the obligatory pumpkin patch photo.

3. Have a Leafy Photoshoot

You don't need professional equipment to capture some lovely autumn memories.

Find a spot covered in colourful leaves and let your dog explore while you grab a few photos.

Try capturing them:

  • Running through fallen leaves
  • Sitting amongst the trees
  • Carrying their favourite toy
  • Exploring a woodland path
  • Enjoying a well-earned rest

The best photos are often the completely unplanned ones.

4. Try a New Dog Walk

Instead of taking the same route every day, choose somewhere you've never explored.

A new walk means new smells, sights and sounds for your dog to investigate.

It doesn't need to be a huge hike either. A new local park or countryside route can feel like a completely different adventure.

5. Go on a Muddy Adventure

Autumn and mud go hand in hand.

Find a dog-friendly trail, beach or countryside route where your dog can enjoy getting properly muddy.

Then come home, grab the towels and get cosy.

Muddy paws are just proof you had a good day.

6. Create an Autumn Enrichment Game

Not every autumn day needs to involve a big adventure.

On rainy afternoons, bring the fun indoors with some simple dog enrichment activities.

Hide treats around the house and encourage your dog to sniff them out, use a snuffle mat or create a simple food puzzle.

You can even hide their favourite toy and encourage them to find it.

These activities are a great way to keep your dog's brain busy when the weather isn't cooperating.

7. Enjoy a Crisp Coastal Walk

If you're lucky enough to live near the coast, autumn can be a brilliant time for a quieter beach walk.

Cooler temperatures and fewer crowds can make exploring the shoreline even more enjoyable.

Just remember to check local restrictions around dogs and be mindful of tides and rough weather.

8. Have a Cosy Day at Home

Sometimes the best autumn adventure is no adventure at all.

After a busy morning outside, give your dog plenty of time to rest.

A comfortable dog bed, their favourite toy and a good supply of treats can turn a rainy afternoon into the perfect cosy day.

9. Make a Dog-Friendly Autumn Treat

If your dog enjoys a tasty reward, try making a simple seasonal treat using dog-safe ingredients.

Pumpkin can be suitable for dogs when prepared simply, but always check that anything you give your dog is safe for them and avoid added sugar, spices or artificial sweeteners.

Make the Most of Autumn Together

Autumn doesn't have to mean staying indoors until spring.

There are woodland walks to explore, leaves to crunch through, pumpkins to discover and plenty of cosy evenings waiting at home.

Whether you're planning a big weekend adventure or simply taking a different route on your evening walk, the best autumn activities are often the simplest ones especially when your dog gets to come along.

So grab your boots, pack the treats and get ready for plenty of muddy paws. 🐾🍂
