10 Things to Do With Your Dog This Autumn

Autumn is one of the best times of year to get out and explore with your dog. Cooler temperatures, colourful woodland walks, crisp mornings and plenty of muddy adventures make the season perfect for spending quality time together.

As the days get shorter and summer fades away, it's easy to fall into the same daily routine. So why not make the most of the changing season and try something new?

1. Explore a new walking route

There's no better time to discover somewhere new.

Autumn transforms familiar landscapes, with colourful leaves, crisp paths and new scents for your dog to investigate. Try visiting a different local park, woodland, nature trail or countryside route.

You don't necessarily need to travel far. Even taking a different route around your local area can make a familiar walk feel like a brand-new adventure.

Let your dog take their time to sniff and explore – after all, for them, a walk is about much more than simply getting from A to B.

Autumn tip: Take a towel with you if you're heading somewhere muddy. You never know when those clean paws are going to become very muddy paws!

2. Go for a woodland walk

Autumn and woodland walks were practically made for each other.

Crunchy leaves, cooler temperatures and plenty of interesting smells create an exciting environment for curious dogs.

Choose a dog-friendly woodland or forest and give your dog plenty of opportunities to sniff and explore. Just remember that woodland walks can contain hazards such as fallen branches, fungi, acorns and seasonal plants, so keep an eye on what your dog is investigating.

And, of course, don't forget to take some photos!

Autumn provides the perfect backdrop for some seriously cute dog photography.

3. Visit a dog-friendly beach

Who says beach days are just for summer?

The cooler months can be a fantastic time to visit the coast with your dog, particularly when popular beaches become quieter and the summer crowds disappear.

Your dog can enjoy running, sniffing, exploring and, if they're a fan of water, having a splash in the sea.

Always check local dog restrictions before visiting a beach, as some have seasonal rules around where and when dogs are allowed.

After your adventure, give muddy or sandy paws a good clean and make sure your dog has somewhere comfortable to dry off and relax.

4. Have an autumn picnic

Pack a few dog-friendly snacks, grab a blanket and head somewhere scenic for an autumn picnic.

It doesn't have to be an elaborate affair. A thermos of coffee for you, some treats for your dog and a beautiful view can be enough to turn an ordinary afternoon into something special.

Choose a dog-friendly location and keep your dog safely with you around food and other people.

For an extra cosy autumn day, take along their favourite blanket or portable dog bed so they have somewhere comfortable to settle while you enjoy the view.

5. Try a dog-friendly café

When the weather starts to cool down, there's nothing better than finding a cosy café after a walk.

More and more cafés, pubs and restaurants welcome dogs, so why not find a dog-friendly spot near one of your favourite walking routes?

A post-walk coffee and treat can become a lovely autumn tradition.

Before visiting, always check that dogs are welcome and whether there are any specific rules around where they can sit.

6. Have a photo day

Autumn gives you one of the most beautiful natural backdrops of the year, so grab your phone or camera and have a little photo session with your dog.

You don't need professional equipment. Some of the best photos are often the completely unplanned ones.

Try capturing:

  • Your dog jumping through leaves

  • Their muddy paws after a walk

  • A cosy nap at home

  • A woodland adventure

  • Your dog exploring somewhere new

  • Their favourite autumn walking spot

  • Those gorgeous golden-hour walks

Don't worry about getting the perfect pose. The candid moments often capture your dog's personality best.

7. Go on a dog-friendly adventure

Autumn is the perfect time to turn an ordinary walk into a proper adventure.

Pack some water, treats, a lead, a towel and anything else you might need, then head somewhere you've never explored before.

This could be a countryside trail, a coastal walk, a new park or even a weekend camping trip.

If you're heading further afield, make sure your dog has somewhere comfortable to settle once you arrive. A portable dog bed or travel-friendly shelter can make adventures much easier, particularly when your dog needs a break.

The best adventures don't have to be complicated – sometimes all you need is a dog, a lead and somewhere new to explore.

8. Make the most of muddy walks

Let's be honest – autumn walks can get muddy.

But rather than worrying about keeping your dog clean, embrace it!

Let them splash through puddles, explore muddy paths and enjoy being a dog. Yes, you'll probably have a little more cleaning to do afterwards, but muddy paws are part of the fun.

Keep an old towel by the door, give their paws a quick clean after walks and have a dedicated place where they can dry off.

Because a little mud never hurt a good adventure.

9. Try some autumn enrichment at home

Not every autumn day will be perfect for getting outside.

Rainy afternoons are a great opportunity to introduce some indoor enrichment and give your dog something to think about.

Try:

  • Hiding treats around the house

  • Playing scent games

  • Teaching a new trick

  • Using a puzzle feeder

  • Playing hide and seek

  • Practising recall indoors

  • Giving your dog a safe chew

  • Creating a simple homemade enrichment game

Mental stimulation can be just as important as physical exercise, and even a few minutes of training or scent work can help keep your dog entertained.

Afterwards, give them somewhere comfortable to settle and enjoy a well-earned nap.

10. Have a cosy dog day at home

Sometimes the best plans involve doing absolutely nothing.

After a busy autumn of walks and adventures, give your dog a proper day off.

Put the kettle on, get comfortable and let your dog curl up in their favourite spot. Read a book, watch a film or simply enjoy a quiet afternoon together.

Dogs need plenty of rest, too, and a comfortable, supportive dog bed gives them somewhere to switch off between adventures.

There doesn't always need to be an exciting activity planned. Sometimes your dog's favourite thing to do is simply be near you.

Make this autumn one to remember

Autumn doesn't have to mean the end of outdoor adventures. In many ways, it's just the beginning of a different kind of adventure.

There are new places to explore, leaves to chase, puddles to jump in and plenty of cosy evenings waiting at home.

So this autumn, try something different. Take the longer route. Visit somewhere new. Let your dog get muddy. Stop for that coffee. Take too many photos.

Most importantly, enjoy the season together.

Because the best adventures are the ones shared with your best four-legged friend.

Here's to crisp walks, muddy paws, colourful leaves and plenty of cosy naps. 🍂🐾
